Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers: Moanin’
Label: Blue Note
Year: 1958
The Philly IV (Golson, Morgan, Timmons & Merritt) were the best team of Messengers Art Blakey ever fielded. Bobby Timmons wrote an all time standard with the title track, and while Benny Golson was not a Messenger for long, his compositions “Along Came Betty” & “Blues March” remained embedded in the Jazz Messengers book long after his departure. Bu thunderously swings “The Drum Thunder (Miniature) Suite” and The Philly IV take Moanin’ out in style with “Come Rain or Come Shine”.
