Pylon: Gyrate
Pylon: Gyrate
Label: DB Records
Year: 1980
Gyrate opens with new wave minimalism as early 80s college rock in America was evolving like early 70s pub rock evolved in England. With the guitar carrying lyrics as much as the vocal (if not more so) and the bass often doubling it, Pylon had kids dancing at college bars all over the southeast/south. “Feast on My Heart” vamps for three and a half minutes, it’s hard to tell whom is following what on “The Human Body”, the structure of “Read a Book” is bananas, “Driving School” is a masterclass on how to open side 2, and “Danger” is the climax. Pylon hit hard without overpowering the ear that when Gyrate ends it’s jarring, leaving the eye to continue staring at the cover in silence.
