The Rolling Stones: Let It Bleed
Label: London Records
Year: 1969
Following the gigantic leap they made on Beggars Banquet The Rolling Stones make yet another gigantic leap with Let It Bleed. “Gimme Shelter” is as good as it gets, the drums on “Love In Vain” are how drums are supposed to sound and the horn on “Country Honk” makes you think someone is behind you or your ride has arrived. Keith is doing double duty alongside Mick Taylor making his Stones debut on “Live With Me” as Brian Jones was ostensibly poolside and the title cut is a team accomplishment as Charlie comes in big, Keith slides his ass off, Mick blows his lips off and Ian Stewart brings it home. No time to rest. “Midnight Rambler” is classic Glimmer Twins, Keith celebrates his vocal limitations on “You Got The Silver” and “Monkey Man” is Scorsese’s wet dream. Which brings us to the thrilling conclusion of Let It Bleed in “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, featuring the choral arranging genius of the man behind the man who stood behind the Wall of Sound, Mr. Jack Nitzsche. And that is a perfect capstone for the 1960s.
