The Smiths: Strangeways, Here We Come
The Smiths: Strangeways, Here We Come
Label: Rough Trade
Year: 1987
Johnny Marr’s genius is finding the seams and spaces within a song to apply his anti-guitar hero brilliance, Rourke & Joyce are overlooked as a tight rhythm section and Steve Morrissey doesn’t always get noticed for the versatility of his voice. “Death of a Disco Dancer” is alternative universe Elton John, “Girlfriend in a Coma” is pop music’s dark comedy high water mark, “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” went number one with a bullet…somewhere and “Paint A Vulgar Picture” proves they could change pace whenever they wanted. The Smiths shouldn’t have been this good together and hopefully they never will be together again.
