Erroll Garner: Concert By The Sea
Label: Columbia
Year: 1955
Erroll Garner was born to play the piano propped up by a phone book with a big smile on his face and joy pouring out his soul. He was a master of sound dynamics going loud to quiet in just one note who would have made a world renown concert pianist if he were interested in coloring within the lines. What makes Concert By The Sea so fascinating (other than the above of course, and the brush work of drummer Denzil Best who cooks on all burners), is the fact it wasn't supposed to be recorded at all. What makes it even more fascinating is that it was recorded by a non-professional on a sub-professional device giving the performance a DIY vibe as rarely does a recording of this quality featuring world class musicians get an official release. Concert By The Sea is an appropriate title of the album as Erroll, Denzil and bassist Eddie Calhoun crash like waves while displaying the calmness of the sea.
