R.E.M.: Document
Label: I.R.S. Records
Year: 1987
With 1987’s Document, R.E.M. opted not to go to the well for another Life’s Rich Pageant, nor did they hark back to their jangle roots like everyone who attended UGA from 1980 to 1984 longed for. Instead they brought in Scott Litt who provides the big ready made hockey rink sound R.E.M. were seeking. “Finest Worksong” is that sound, “Exhuming McCarthy” is funny, “The One I Love” is mean and “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” is perfect, demonstrating the core R.E.M. sound is still intact as Document marks the beginning of the R.E.M. Litts Hitts era.
