For Smashing Pumpkins album number 2, head Pumpkin William Corgan was sure of 2 things. First and foremost, William knew he had the perfect drummer in which to construct his vision, and also first and foremost he had the perfect producer to document it. “Cherub Rock” is sick, “Quiet” isn’t and no one needs to hear “Today” again although the message would be well heeded. From there (and possibly before for the discerning ear), it becomes a matter of how much do you want to hear a drummer operating as his best self recorded by a famous producer operating on his highest level under the direction of Billy Corgan? Probably not 62 minutes, the 5:13 of “Geek U.S.A.” notwithstanding.
