The Concert For Bangladesh
Label: Apple Records
Year: 1971
The Concert For Bangladesh begins with the five minute “George Harrison/Ravi Shankar Introduction” thanking all for coming and informing all why such a monumental event is taking place before Ravi and his team open the concert and close side 1 with the apolitical “Bangla Drum”. On side 2, George - fronting a band for the first time (in a sold out MSG for a good cause) - meets the moment by delivering three classics in front of a great band assembled on short notice, and the side closes with the Billy Preston led “That’s The Way God Planned It”, which surely means well. Richard Starkey opens side 3 singing his world wide smash “It Don’t Come Easy” while forgetting the words, before George waltzes back in with “Beware Of Darkness”, the heartfelt “Band Introduction” and closes with arguably a top 10 Beatles tune. Band member Leon Russell opens side 4 demonstrating no idea of space, time or that he’s performing for a good cause, however band leader George straightens things out with arguably a top 10 Beatles song. Enter Bobby, who walked uptown to help out a friend and takes over side 5 after having been out of the game for an eternity. Side six, the final side, opens up with arguably another top 10 Beatles song and closes with “Bangla Desh”, a theme song for a good cause.
