Burning Spear: Marcus Garvey Label: Island Year: 1975 Marcus Garvey would have been as timely in 1875 as it was in 1975 and probably will be in 2075 as it’s so hyper-political and hyper-spiritual it makes many “political” and/or “spiritual” albums sound silly. On another note, “Resting Place” is proof that Burning Spear could get asses shaking if they made that a priority. On yet another note, it would be interesting to hear the original Jack Ruby mix of Marcus Garvey that Island Records deemed to be non-commercial as a darker vibe would have taken the political and spiritual level to another plane of consciousness. Of course that’s probably why Island rejected it.
